a picture's worth a thousand words. therefore, this entry has 4334 words...

More people pictures, from l'Etape this morning. In this first one is makou, the lady from Senegal I mentioned a week or two ago. The flash sort of lit up her face weird in this photo, but you can still see the bright smile she constantly wears :) A good deal of people we work with for Les Petits Freres des Pauvres have social problems to some extent or another because of the hard times they've been through, but Makou is one of the nicest people I know.

On the left is Jimmy. I don't know why he has an English name, but whatever. He always has those pink sunglasses and usually wears that hat, too. I like to joke that he sees "la vie en rose." (spencer, that's in reference to a famous song sung by singer edith piaf. louis armstrong did a version of it too, i think. you've probably heard it before. in fact, it might even be in the ratatouille movie... maybe not.) On his left is Medei. I just met Medei yesterday. He is a hoot. I understand about 70 percent of what he says (which is very often the case with these immigrants. sometimes i really struggle to understand them through their thick accents, especially on the phone). Medei is from North Africa area, I believe. Yesterday he told me to talk to him, and so I started telling him a story I made up on the spot, about a bunny rabbit who lost his way home one day when he was coming home from school. Jean-Mark, a volunteer who comes on Wednesdays, sat on the other side laughing at me, and Medei kept telling me that my story was too complicated. Today he made me tell it to him again.

tis me wearing medei's hat. i look like a british horsewoman of some sort... (especially with the feather that you can't really see in this picture.)

  1. Picture do tell a thousand words! Thanks for sharing these. It's nice to visualize a part of the scenes of your daily life.

PS: looking at these characters, one would almost expect them to break into an Ella Fitzgerald/Louis Armstrong type jazz piece any minute, wouldn't one?

  2. Thanks for the carification. Is the phrase something along the lines of "life in rose"? My mom says "look at the world through rose colored glasses" a lot so I was guessing it was similiar to that. :) Those are some fun pictures. You look great in that hat too!
